62nd Annual Pinewood Derby Race Pack #4477

The Annual Cub Scout Tradition

By Candace Mangold March 1, 2018

The Pinewood Derby is here!

Port Townsend Cub Scout Pack #4477 has been working hard, along with over 1 million other Cub Scouts nationwide, to create their original Pinewood Derby car for the upcoming race scheduled for March 6. Come cheer on the scouts as they show off their handiwork and race their creations to win a trophy! Watch as the cars stream down the colored lines of the wood track at speeds topping nearly 20 MPH!

This time-honored tradition has been going on since 1953. More than 100 million Pinewood Derby cars have been built in all. The original Pinewood Derby cars didn't look much different than they do today. The main difference is that most Pinewood Derby cars are built from kits. Back then, you had to make them from scratch.

The Cubs and their parents will tell you that whether it be from scratch or a kit, building and preparing your Pinewood Derby car is a time-consuming and tedious process. Learning to adjust the shape and weight to get the greatest speed is key. It's a lesson in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)! It's also a lesson in patience, for children and adults alike. Overall, I think we would all agree that we can't wait to do it again next year.

See you at the races!
