Jefferson Land Trust seeks high-school students aged 16 and up for our 2018 Spring Break Youth Corps! Applications are due by March 21, so don’t delay.
This field-based internship program runs from April 2 – April 6, 2018; 9:30 am – 4 pm. Transportation to work sites will be provided from Quilcene Schools. A light lunch will be provided, and a stipend of $250 for participation in the full week.
Description
The applicant will work as part of a team of high school students to complete a variety of tasks necessary to maintain or restore our local natural lands to their best possible condition. The work will be entirely outdoors and will be physically demanding – visiting some of the most remote places and difficult terrain that Jefferson Land Trust protects and stewards for wildlife habitat. With each new task, corps members will learn the importance of the management activity to forest and stream health. Examples of tasks include: blackberry thicket removal, survey across steep, uneven terrain, trash removal from creek corridor, in-creek removal of nightshade that can block fish passage, and habitat restoration. Transportation to sites will be provided from Quilcene School.
Requirements
This position is open to high school students aged 16 and up. A parent/guardian signature on Release Form will be required for participation in this internship
This position is physically demanding. Applicant must be able to walk over uneven terrain, across streams, through thick brush, blackberry, and up and down slopes. Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including sun and rain. Must be able to work with shovels, mattocks, loppers, and other hand tools (instruction provided). Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
Jefferson Land Trust will provide transportation for students from Quilcene School.
Necessary items (this gear is available to borrow by pre-arrangement):
Rubber boots and work boots/sturdy footwear
Rain jacket
Rain pants
Personal water bottle
Stipend: $250 for participation in full week.
