Our Oily Routine

One Family's Journey into the World of Essential Oils

How we use essential oils every day

I used to think essential oils were strictly for smells. And hippies. I had zero clue that they had therapeutic benefits that stretch FAR beyond making your house smell good.

Over the past two years we have incorporated essential oils into our everyday lives, slowly replacing the normal go-tos with safer options.

However, I realize starting out can be overwhelming. I felt the same way. And one of the questions I get asked the most is, ‘what does an oily day look like?’ So here is a rundown of how we use oils daily in our house!

Morning

Each morning begins by starting the diffuser. During the fall/winter, we ALWAYS have Thieves (immune-supporting blend) going. I will add a citrus to help boost moods, such as Orange or Lemon. If there is a big test or presentation ahead, I will diffuse Believe or Valor for belief and courage. My kids LOVE experimenting with their own blends, so we rotate who gets to fill the diffuser each day.

In addition to diffusing, we roll Thieves on the feet and perhaps DiGize for digestive support, if needed. If I remember, we will spray hair and backpacks with Purification and Tea Tree, both effective at repelling lice, which we DO NOT want to bring home from school!

Finally, the kids take their oil-infused supplements such as Mightyzymes (look up the power of enzymes for overall body function), and Super C (a high-powered vitamin c chewable). Did you know that essential oils are known to increase bioavailability (rate of absorbed nutrition) by up to 70%? This is why you want to have them in your supplements!

Afternoon

During the day we add citrus or peppermint oils to our water. Lemon and Orange help to flush out toxins and boost energy. Peppermint is helpful for nausea, tummy issues, and food cravings. Grapefruit is amazing for weight control and to help with sugar cravings. And the great thing about essential oils is that they will not harm teeth like too many lemon slices will!

I will generally add a focus oil like Frankincense, Cedarwood, or Lavender to my diffuser to help with the afternoon slump. Peppermint on the back of the neck is also an amazing way to perk you up. Try peppermint during a workout and you are sure to boost your performance!

Depending on how the kids did in school that day, we will use oils for support: Geneyus, Vetiver, or Cedarwood for grounding and homework support, Stress Away after a tough day, or any citrus oil to create a happy, uplifting environment. Harmony is fabulous for bickering siblings!

Evening

We love to add detoxing oils such as Lemon or Thieves to Epsom salts for a calming, germ-busting bath. You can also add calming oils such as Lavender and Frankincense for a calming bath.

The kids take their oil-infused pre/probiotic every night (look up the connection between gut health and the immune system!). We also apply Thieves to their feet for prevention.

We have diffusers next to each of our beds so those get turned on during story time (Lavender and Cedarwood are our calming go-tos).

Purification is known to support night terrors and/or bad dreams. I will rub a couple drops on their feet and add to the diffuser as well.

This is not meant to overwhelm but inspire. After experiencing the amazing benefits of these plant juices, we are perfectly comfortable being called ‘oily.’ We wouldn’t have it any other way!
