The grass is green, the flowers blooming, and spring is fully in bloom! There are so many to honor this month, from teachers and mothers to those who died while serving in the U.S. military. Here are 10 special family-friendly holidays and events you and your kids will want to mark in May:

National Foster Care Month

May marks the month when we recognize families making a meaningful difference in the lives of the more than 440,000 children in foster care throughout the United States. Find out more about the important work of fostering children. May 1-31

National Bike Month

Did you know that 40 percent of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles? That means we should all get on our bicycles more! Commit with your kids to ride your bikes as much as possible throughout May. And don't forget Bike to School Day on May 8! May 1-31

In celebration this month, check out the Bike Safety Day at Salish Coast Elementary on Saturday, May 4. Practice walking or biking to school before the big Walk/Bike to School event on Weds. May 8 by joining in the practice walk/bike event on Saturday at 10 a.m. Bring your bike and get the tires checked for air pressure, seat adjustment, etc.

May Day

Spread the springtime celebration cheer by making a May Day basket for your neighbors. Here are some ideas for how to do it.

Celebrate May Day by attending the Plant-A-Palooza fundraiser for The Swan School! Free Comic Book Day

It's a happy coincidence that this year's free comic book day also falls on Star Wars Day, when fans celebrate the movie series with the phrase "May the fourth be with you." May 4

Cinco de Mayo

In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday meant to mark the day the Mexican Army beat the French Army in the 1800s. In the United States, however, the day has turned into a giant celebration of Mexican-American culture, music, and cuisine. May 5
